About the Windstorm
Anyone living in the greater-Cincinnati area knows that on September 14th, a windstorm, with gusts up to close to 80 mph, swept through the area creating significant damge which resulted in power outages for over a week in some areas.  In something of a freak accident, a tree fell through the roof of one local house which resulted in the death of a  Mt. Healthy resident.

Within the confines of Arlington, we lost 26 trees and parts of many others.  Fortunately, we were lucky as the falling trees created only minor damage, although we did lose two features on the Garden of Roses.  In order to clean the grounds, it took nearly 1,000 man hours to remove the debris created by the storm.  We have included some pictures of the damage, although the pictures do not depict the full scale of the damage.

In addition to tree damage, many of the areas that had been newly seeded were also damaged resulting in the seed and fertilizer simply being swept away.  As a result, most of those areas will be sodded beginning in October.

New Sod
Beginning on October 15th, the Grounds Team will be installing sod on those graves that are new or those requiring repair or attention.  This activity replaces the seeding of graves that has been ongoing since mid-August.  With the onset of cooler weather and the expectation of additional percipitation, conditions typically are ideal for installing sod.  There are graves literally numbering in the hundreds that will receive attention during the period of time that sod farms yield and deliver sod to us.  We expect to be able to continue installing sod through the end of the year and perhaps into January.  Throughout the summer months, the heat and the relative lack of rainfall inhibits and often prevents seeding or sodding.  During that time, the Grounds Team mark any new grave with a "maintenance" flag indicating that the grave site is scheduled for additional work/repair when the weather permits.  If you are aware of an area that requires attention, please contact the Administrative Center at 521-7003 to insure that your concern is properly addressed.
